Mysore sandalwood, and the story India almost lost

You already know this smell. A temple. A bar of soap. The wooden box where your grandmother kept her jewellery. What almost nobody knows is how close it came to disappearing altogether.

Part One

The smell you already know

Most Indians know the smell of sandalwood before they know the word. It is in the temple. It is in the soap. It is in the paste on a forehead at a wedding. It is in an old wooden almirah, opened after the rains.

Chandan is not an exotic perfume ingredient here. It is furniture. It is childhood.

Which makes the next sentence strange to write. The sandalwood you grew up with has largely gone.

Not gone as a smell. You can still buy sandalwood soap tomorrow. But the wood itself is another matter. The slow-grown Mysore heartwood that made India the hub of the world trade for over a century is now scarce, guarded and very costly. Most of what smells like sandalwood today is not sandalwood.

How that happened involves a king, a tree disease, a state monopoly, and one of the longest manhunts in Indian history. It is a better story than perfume brands usually tell. Almost none of them tell it.

Part Two

What sandalwood actually is

Sandalwood is a tree that cannot feed itself properly.

Santalum album is the Indian species. It is a part-parasite. Its roots grow tiny hooks that latch on to the roots of nearby plants. Through those hooks it draws water and food. Plant a sandalwood seedling alone in good soil and it struggles. Plant it beside the right neighbour and it thrives.

That one fact explains a lot. You cannot farm sandalwood the way you farm sugarcane. It needs a companion plant, the right soil, and patience.

The oil is not spread through the tree. It gathers in the heartwood, the dense core, and in the roots. Young trees hold almost none. The heartwood fills slowly. Most growers say a tree needs fifteen to thirty years before the oil is worth taking. Older trees give better oil.

And harvesting means killing. You cannot tap sandalwood the way you tap rubber. The whole tree comes out of the ground, roots and all. The roots hold some of the best oil.

So the maths is harsh. A slow tree, worth little for twenty years. Then worth a fortune. And only once.

Sandalwood cannot grow well alone. It attaches to a neighbouring plant underground and takes what it needs. The oil concentrates in the heartwood and roots, which is why harvesting means uprooting the whole tree.
Part Three

Why Mysore became the benchmark

All sandalwood is not equal, and perfumers worked this out early.

The smell comes from a group of compounds called santalols. They are what make sandalwood soft, creamy and faintly milky. The more santalol in the oil, the rounder it smells.

Sandalwood from the Mysore region of Karnataka sat at the top of that scale. The soil suited the tree. So did the height, the climate and the slow growth. By the 1800s, Mysore oil was the standard everyone else was judged against.

This mattered a great deal to perfumers. Sandalwood is not only a note. It is a fixative. It slows everything around it down. It gives a scent a soft landing. Good sandalwood makes the whole perfume behave better. That is why it sits in the base of so many classics. It is also why base notes built on it tend to last.

Then came a series of events that nobody planned.

Part Four

How India lost it

1792
The royal tree
Tipu Sultan is widely said to have made sandalwood a royal tree in the Kingdom of Mysore. From then on the state owned the sandalwood, not the landowner, even on private land. The aim was to guard something valuable. The long-run effect was messier.
1800s
The world standard
Mysore oil becomes the world's mark of quality. Indian sandalwood ships to Europe, the Middle East and China. It goes into perfume, carving, incense and medicine.
1916
The government distillery
Karnataka sets up state sandalwood oil production at Mysore. Government-made Mysore oil becomes a known name in its own right, and stays one for decades.
Early 1900s onward
Spike disease
A disease called sandal spike begins killing the trees. Leaves shrink and go spiky. The tree dies. There is still no reliable cure. Sick trees have to be cut and removed. Over decades it wipes out a large share of India's sandalwood.
1970s – 2004
The smuggling era
Private owners could not legally cut or sell the sandalwood on their own land. So many stopped guarding it. Some stopped planting it. A huge illegal trade grew in the forests of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The best known figure was Veerappan, a sandalwood and ivory smuggler. He stayed free for roughly two decades and was killed in 2004. Estimates of how much he moved vary widely. The scale of the wider illegal trade was large.
2001 onward
The rules loosen
Karnataka, and later other states, begin to ease the rules. Private landowners can now grow and sell sandalwood legally. The thinking is simple. If people can earn from a tree, they will plant it and guard it. Plantations begin, slowly.
Today
Vulnerable, and recovering slowly
Santalum album is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Legal Indian sandalwood now sells mostly at government auctions, at high prices. Research bodies such as ICFRE work on better planting methods and on disease. New trees are going in. But one planted this year will not be cut until the 2050s.

A tree planted the year you read this will be ready when your children are middle-aged.

Part Five

What perfumery did next

The industry needed sandalwood and could no longer rely on India. Two things happened.

Australia started growing the Indian tree

Australia already had its own species, Santalum spicatum. It is drier and greener, with less santalol. Then Australian growers began planting Santalum album, the Indian tree itself, in large watered plantations up north. Those farms now supply much of the world's real Indian-species oil.

This makes labels confusing. Australian sandalwood might mean the Australian tree. Or it might mean the Indian tree, grown in Australia, which smells much closer to old Mysore oil. Read the species name, not the country.

Chemists built sandalwood molecules

The other answer came from chemists. A family of sandalwood-like molecules now exists. They are sold under names such as Javanol, Sandalore, Ebanol and Polysantol. The whole industry uses them, from cheap body sprays to very costly niche perfume.

These are not fakes in any real sense. They are proper perfume materials with known safety records. They sit inside the limits set by the International Fragrance Association. And since the real tree is now Vulnerable, there is a fair green case for using them.

But they do smell different. Most are louder, drier and travel further than the real oil. That is partly on purpose, because throw sells. It is also your best clue for telling them apart.

The honest summary

Almost every sandalwood perfume you can afford is a blend of real oil and lab-made molecules. Or lab-made alone. That is normal and it is fair. The only question worth asking a brand is which, and how much.

Real or synthetic: five checks

Do the price arithmetic
Legal Indian sandalwood sells at auction for tens of thousands of rupees per kilo. The oil is priced to match. A perfume costing a few hundred rupees cannot hold much of it. Start here, as with oud.

Smell for milk, not for wood
Real sandalwood is creamy and soft. Almost like milk. It is rounder and quieter than people expect. If a scent shouts wood at you, lab-made materials are doing most of the work.

Notice how far it travels
Real sandalwood sits close to the skin. It rewards someone standing near you. It does not fill a room. Big throw from a sandalwood scent nearly always means a lab-made molecule is doing the work.

Look for a species name
Santalum album. Santalum spicatum. Mysore. Australian. These are checkable claims. Sandalwood accord, sandal notes and woody amber are not.

Ask the brand
One email. Does this contain natural Santalum oil, which species, roughly what proportion. A brand using real oil answers with a species name. A vague answer is still an answer.
Two tests that do not work

People suggest rubbing the wood to release scent, or checking whether the oil is colourless. Neither tells you anything reliable about a finished alcohol-based perfume. Both belong to the raw wood trade. Ignore them.

Part Seven

How to wear sandalwood

Sandalwood is the easiest of the great Indian materials to wear. It is also the most misread.

Two practical notes. First, sandalwood is a base note, so give it time. At thirty minutes you are still meeting the opening. The sandalwood turns up properly in the second hour and then stays. Part Eight

What we use, and what we don't

We name Mysore sandalwood as one of our sourced materials, so we owe you the detail.

Our sandalwood is a blend of real Santalum oil and lab-made sandalwood materials. It is not pure natural oil. A 45 percent Extrait needs a lot of material. All-natural sandalwood would push these bottles into five figures. We would rather say that plainly than let the word Mysore do quiet work on a label.

The real oil is there for the creaminess, and for how it settles in the base. The lab-made part is there for steadiness, for supply, and to hold the price where it is.

We also do not call our sandalwood old-growth, wild-cut or pre-ban stock. Those claims float around this category. Most of them cannot be true at any scale. Ours is legal, ordinary, good material. The same rule we applied to oud applies here.

Part Nine

Chandan, and what gets sold as it

Perfume is only a small part of India's sandalwood story. Most chandan in daily life never goes near a perfume bottle.

It goes into agarbatti. Into soap. Into temple paste. Into wedding rituals. Into ayurvedic preparations. Into carved boxes and prayer beads. That everyday demand is enormous, and it is far larger than perfumery could ever be.

Which raises an awkward question. If real sandalwood is scarce and costly, what exactly is in a ten rupee bar of sandalwood soap?

Usually one of three things.

A lab-made sandalwood molecule. The most common answer, and the most honest of the three. It smells sandalwood-ish, it is safe, and it is cheap. Nobody is being harmed.

A different wood entirely. Cheaper woods are often sold under sandalwood names in Indian markets. Red sanders turns up. So do various local woods. They are not the same tree and do not smell the same. A strong added scent can hide the gap.

Sandalwood oil cut with something else. In the oil trade, real sandalwood is sometimes stretched with cheaper oils. Or with lab-made stand-ins. This is the version that costs buyers real money, because it sells at natural prices.

None of this makes chandan soap bad. A pleasant, affordable, lab-scented soap is a perfectly good thing. The point is narrower: the word sandalwood on a cheap product almost never means the tree. Once you know that, the whole category becomes easier to read.

A note on ritual use

If you buy sandalwood for puja, the rules differ and are worth knowing. Temple-grade chandan paste and real sandalwood malas are still made from the wood. Their prices show it. A sandalwood mala at a hundred rupees is not sandalwood.

Buy from sellers with a long record. Ask which species it is. Real sandalwood still gives up its scent years later when you rub it with a little water. Most stand-ins do not.

Sandalwood grown in the Mysore region of Karnataka historically produced oil with a very high santalol content, the compounds responsible for the creamy sandalwood aroma. Perfumers worldwide treated it as the benchmark for over a century. Soil, climate and slow growth in that region produced a softer, milkier oil than sandalwood from elsewhere, which is why the word Mysore still carries weight.

Only in very limited quantities. Santalum album is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Decades of over-harvesting, spike disease and illegal felling reduced wild stocks severely. Karnataka now regulates harvesting closely and legal Indian sandalwood is sold through government auctions at high prices. Most sandalwood in modern perfumery comes from Australian plantations of the same species, or from synthetic molecules.

Soft, creamy and slightly milky, with warm wood underneath. It is much quieter than people expect. Real sandalwood does not announce itself from across a room. It sits close to the skin and reveals itself to someone standing near you. Many people describe it as calming rather than impressive, which is part of why it has been used in temples and meditation for centuries.

Start with price arithmetic, since natural sandalwood oil is expensive enough that cheap fragrances cannot contain much. Then use your nose. Real sandalwood is creamy and close to the skin. Synthetic sandalwood molecules are drier, louder and project further. Check the label for a species name such as Santalum album. And ask the brand directly which they use.

No. Synthetic sandalwood molecules are used across the entire fragrance industry, including in expensive luxury perfume. They are stable, consistent, and they relieve pressure on a species that is genuinely threatened. Given that Santalum album is listed as Vulnerable, there is a reasonable environmental argument for using them. The problem is only when a brand implies natural sandalwood while using a lab-made molecule.

Sandalwood is a hemiparasitic tree that needs a host plant to grow, and it takes roughly fifteen to thirty years before the heartwood develops enough oil to be worth harvesting. Only the heartwood and roots hold meaningful oil, so harvesting means uprooting the whole tree. Add legal protection, restricted harvesting and high global demand, and the result is one of the most expensive woods in the world.

Indian sandalwood, Santalum album, is prized for high santalol content and a creamy character. Australian sandalwood usually means Santalum spicatum, a different species with a drier, greener profile and lower santalol levels. Confusingly, Australia also grows plantation Santalum album, the Indian species, which is chemically much closer to traditional Mysore oil. Check the species name, not just the country.

Sandalwood appears in the base of several of our fragrances, most prominently Whisper of Woods, True Gentleman and Mystic Amber. We use a blend of natural Santalum oil and synthetic sandalwood materials rather than natural oil alone, because natural sandalwood at the volumes required would place these bottles far outside our price range. We state the blend openly.
